Ciboure

Ciboure sits on the Atlantic coast of the French Basque country, on the western bank of the Nivelle directly opposite the harbour of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. A working fishing port of just under 6,000 inhabitants, it is the birthplace of composer Maurice Ravel and home to the 12th-century Notre-Dame de Bordagain church, whose 14th-century tower was originally built for defence. The town's mild oceanic climate, painted shipowners' houses and quiet quaysides give it a distinct character from its busier twin across the bay.
