Mild but cool Tuscan winter. Temperatures around 8°C, morning mists on the hills, many cantine closed. White Alba truffle season (still a few weeks since November) and porcini — gastronomy at peak.
February+
Mid-winter, conditions identical to January. Viareggio carnival season. Estates mostly closed but accessible by appointment for serious connoisseurs.
March+
Winter exit. First wildflowers, temperatures at 12°C, first cantine reopening. Chianti and Val d'Orcia hillsides begin turning green.
April+
Spring settled. Poppies appearing in wheat fields, temperatures at 16°C, Tuscan light regaining its magic. Villas and fattorie open widely. White asparagus and first artichoke season.
May+
Excellent month. Lush hills, poppies, ideal temperatures (20°C). The season where Tuscany reveals its perfect postcard: cypress silhouettes, vineyards turning green, blooming gardens. Vinitaly in Verona (Veneto) attracts the entire Italian wine industry.
June+
Spring peak. Exceptional light, temperatures at 24°C, longest days. Vinitaly and other shows. Perched villages (San Gimignano, Montepulciano, Pienza) emerge from winter torpor, gourmet markets in full activity.
July+
Hot summer (28-32°C). High but still manageable tourist crowds, especially in lesser-known Chianti Classico villages. Outdoor fattoria dinner season, first tastings of new Vino Nobile season.
August+
Tourist and heat peak (35°C or more). Maximum crowds in Florence, Siena, San Gimignano. Many cantine close three weeks for Italian holidays (Ferragosto). For wine tourism, the least recommended month.
September+
The major return. Sangiovese harvests (Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano), thinning crowds after August 15, temperatures dropping to 24°C. One of the most beautiful seasons.
October+
Reference month. Late Sangiovese harvests and early Brunello (the best estates harvest until late October), foliage turning, white Alba truffle hunt beginning in neighbouring Piemonte. Exceptional golden Tuscan light.
November+
End of harvests. First fireplaces, new vintage markets, porcini season and white Alba truffle at apex. Temperatures at 13°C, near-vanished crowds. Major gastronomic season.
December+
Gourmet winter. Christmas markets in Florence, Siena, Lucca. White Alba truffle, game, Siena panforte, ribollita. Cantine mostly closed but starred restaurants in peak form. For gastronomy lovers, fascinating season.
